A Bibliometric Study of Research Trends in Arabic Language Bilingualism (1986-2024)

Abstract

This study aims to map the research landscape of Arabic language bilingualism through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis covering the period from 1986 to 2024. The increasing global prevalence of bilingualism, particularly among Arabic speakers in countries where Arabic is not the primary language, underscores the need for a systematic understanding of how research in this field has evolved. This study collected data from the Scopus database and applied bibliometric methods, including citation analysis, co-authorship network mapping, and journal quartile evaluation, using Microsoft Excel, Publish or Perish (PoP), and VOSviewer. The analysis revealed that the United States was the most influential contributor to research on Arabic bilingualism. The year 2018 recorded the highest number of publications, with a total of 16, while 2017 had the highest number of citations, reaching 348, indicating strong research impact. Current research themes emphasize the cognitive benefits of bilingualism, such as improved working memory and problem-solving abilities, and explore their implications in educational and social settings. These findings highlight the ongoing importance of fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research and suggest that educational policies should incorporate insights from bilingualism studies to enhance language acquisition and development.

Nanang Kosim, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung

Nanang Kosim is a lecturer in Arabic Language Education at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University (UIN) Bandung. He currently heads the Department of Languages. His academic interests include Arabic language education, teaching methodologies, and the development of Islamic-based curricula. He actively participates in national and international academic forums and contributes to advancing adaptive strategies in Arabic language teaching for contemporary education.

Eva Lathifah Fauzia, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung

Eva Latifah Fauziah is the Secretary of the Arabic Language Education Program at the Postgraduate School of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University (UIN) Bandung. She has completed her doctoral studies in Islamic Education and is actively involved in teaching, research, and academic development in the field of Arabic language education. Her interests include curriculum design, language pedagogy, and Islamic education. She also participates in academic forums and contributes to improving Arabic language instruction in higher education.

Ramadhan Safrudin, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung

Ramadhan Safrudin, is a Master's graduate in Arabic Language Education at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. His research focuses on Arabic language teaching methodologies, pedagogical competence, and religious moderation in Arabic textbooks. He has contributed to several studies that explore the integration of modern teaching approaches in Arabic language education. His academic interests include curriculum development, linguistic analysis, and the role of Arabic language learning in fostering intercultural understanding.

Shofwatul Fu'adah, Universitas Ibrahimy

Shofwatul Fu’adah earned her degree in Arabic Language Education from Ibrahimy University. Her academic interests focus on Arabic language teaching, language acquisition, and the development of culturally responsive instructional materials. She is passionate about promoting effective and engaging methods for Arabic language learning in diverse educational settings.

Sri Dewi Priwarti Siregar, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia

Sri Dewi Priwarti Siregar is a graduate of the Master's program in Arabic Language Education. She has conducted extensive research in the field of Arabic language studies, particularly focusing on the development of Arabic teaching materials. Her research also explores the adaptation of Arabic language learning for students with special needs, based on her experience at SLB Solalin in Bandung. Through her academic work, she continues to contribute to the advancement of Arabic language education, emphasizing inclusivity and effective pedagogical strategies.
