Reconstructing Ecological Ethics from Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī: The Possibilities and Limits of Its Contextualization in Indonesian Ecotheological Policy

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic environmental discourse increasingly draws on classical theological and exegetical traditions, yet the methodological legitimacy of translating premodern concepts into modern ecological categories remains contested. This study critically examines how selected concepts in Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb khalīfah (Q. 2:30–31), amānah (Q. 33:72), mīzān (Q. 55:7–9), fasād (Q. 30:41), and isrāf (Q. 7:31) can be ecologically reconstructed and compared with the ecotheological policies of Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs. Using qualitative library research and policy analysis, the study employs hermeneutic reading, content analysis, and thematic comparison. The findings show that these concepts contain theological, ethical, and cosmological elements that permit ecological reinterpretation, although they were not originally formulated as a systematic environmental theory. Contemporary categories such as theocentrism, anthropocentrism, ecocentrism, and cosmocentrism are therefore treated as analytical lenses rather than as al-Rāzī’s own conceptual vocabulary. Comparison with Eco-Friendly Mosques, Forest Waqf, tree-planting initiatives, and the National Ecotheology Policy Document 2025–2029 reveals normative correspondence but not direct historical influence, conceptual identity, policy causation, or institutional effectiveness. The study concludes that the relationship between al-Rāzī’s exegesis and contemporary ecotheological policy is interpretively constructed, normatively comparable, and marked by significant historical and conceptual discontinuities.
